LASG announces plans to increase BRT Electric Bus fleet to 50, says the two used for Pilot Scheme have covered over 120,000-km.

LASG, through LBSL, had on May 1st 2023 began the Electric Bus Pilot Program for passenger operations in the State. 

The Proof-of-concept phase aimed to demonstrate electric bus technology, evaluate its economic and environmental benefits. 

For the pilot scheme, two electric buses, marked with EV 01 and EV 02, were brought in by Oando Clean energy Limited (OCEL).





Each of these electric buses will go 280km at full charge – which exceeds the daily usage of 200km from existing diesel-powered BRTs.

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to increase the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Electric Bus fleet to fifty (50), following the successful pilot scheme that began over 16 months ago.

Sanwo-Olu made this known at the maiden edition of the National Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility in Lagos by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

“LAMATA’s ongoing projects include pilot schemes for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric buses, aimed at achieving sustainable urban transport.”





“Two electric buses (e-buses) and charging stations were introduced in May 2023, covering over 120,000 kilometers. The plan is to scale up the fleet to 50 e-buses following the successful pilot.”

It will be recalled that the Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL), had on May 1st 2023 began the Electric Bus Pilot Program for passenger operations in the State.

The revolutionary proof-of-concept phase was aimed to demonstrate the electric bus technology and evaluate the operational, economic and environmental benefits of using electric buses in Lagos State.

For the pilot scheme, two Yutong-branded electric buses, marked with EV 01 and EV 02, were brought in by Oando Clean energy Limited (OCEL). Each of these electric buses has the ability to travel 280km at full charge (equivalent to a round trip from Ajah to Ibadan), which far exceeds an average daily usage of 200km from existing diesel-powered BRTs.
