Hyundai’s E-corner System Allows Crab Driving, 360-degree Turning, Solved Parallel Parking For Good
Hyundai’s E-corner System allows Crab Driving as well Pivot and 360-degree turning, to solve parallel parking for good.
Hyundai Mobis’ in-wheel system enables driving performance by controlling of all four wheels independently.
In-wheel system is the future mobility solution essential to e-Corner module that enables Zero Turns and Crab Walking.
Hyundai Mobis, the “parts and service” arm for South Korean automaker, Hyundai Motor Company, has announced it is developing an in-wheel system that is equipped in the E-corner System, which allows an electric motor to control each wheel directly.
Hyundai Mobis’s E-corner System is an integrated solution that combines electronic steering, braking, and suspension technologies centered around the in-wheel motor.
In addition to improving the driving range of electric vehicles with secured battery capacity, the in-wheel system also allows unique features like Crab Walking as well as Zero and Pivot Turns.
Hyundai Mobis is currently developing the e-Corner System by installing it in prototype Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric vehicles with a goal of completing the development within the next five years.
Video shared by Hyundai Mobis to show off the Crab Driving features shows an Ioniq 5 EV turn all four wheels perpendicular (90 degrees) to a tight parking spot, before driving in.
Hyundai Mobis also demonstrated the Zero Turn, which basically allows the Ioniq 5 to rotate its front inside while the rear wheels turn outside to perform 360-degree idle turn, a feature that could also come in handy in a tight parking lot.
Hyundai Mobis is currently is verifying its reliability for mass-production based on IONIQ 5 with Hyundai Motor Company. Oh Heung-sub, executive vice president, Head of Electrification, Hyundai Mobis, said :
“We plan to complete the development of this technology that is both durable and reliable so that we can begin mass-production of the in-wheel system by the end of this year. We will continue to idealize the technology to ready ourselves for the future of mobility.”
