Illegal importation of vehicles into Nigeria is on the increase due to the high import duties and exchange rates.

Based on credible informations, Customs had successfully impounded illegally imported cars without duty from different car marts. 

FG earlier announced plans to end vehicle smuggling and evasion of customs duty through the National Vehicle Registry Policy (VREG).





A trending video online shows a desperate driver trying to smuggle a brand new Toyota Prado ultra-luxury SUV into the country through the land borders to avoid paying duty.





Its no news that the illegal importation of vehicles into Nigeria is on the increase due to high import duties and exchange rates, which has resulted in excessive-high landing costs above the affordable level for the majority of Nigerians.

While this vehicle worth over N150 million may arrive safely in the country, the Nigerian Customs Service had successfully impounded illegally imported luxury vehicles without duty from different car marts based on credible information.

It will be recalled that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated N2.79 billion in revenue during the 90-day window (4th March 2024 to 5th June 2024) for the regularisation of import duties on vehicles improperly imported into the country.

The Federal Government had earlier announced plans to end vehicle smuggling and evasion of customs duty by vehicles Importers as well as vehicle-related crimes through the National Vehicle Registry Policy (VREG).

Launched in 2021, the VREG integrates vehicles’ datas like ownership and history across several agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Vehicles Inspection Offices (VIO), the Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
