Angry drivers says ‘We need freedom!’, attack UK Government proposals to end car ownership.

MP had called for shared mobility to become the norm instead, including bike share schemes, car clubs.

It comes as residents in Coventry have expressed interest in giving up their cars in exchange for a £3,000 credit.

These mobility credits can be spent on public transport, taxis, bike share schemes or a car club.

Drivers in UK have attacked the new driving proposals by Transport Minister Trudy Harrison which could see the Government ending car ownership.

Harrison, the MP for Copeland in Cumbria, had last month during the mobility conference called for the UK go to move away from car ownership.

While addressing the future of personal mobility, she said it was necessary to ditch the :

“20th-century thinking centred around private vehicle ownership and towards greater flexibility, with personal choice and low carbon shared transport.”

Harrison called for shared mobility to become the norm instead, including bike share schemes, car clubs, shared rides, e-scooters and demand based transport.

It comes as over 300 residents in Coventry have expressed an interest in giving up their cars in exchange for a credit worth up to £3,000.

According to UK Express, these mobility credits can be spent on public transport, taxis, bike share schemes or a car club.

The pilot has been running since March 2021, and has to date accepted 147 applicants and crushed 73 cars, according to Transport for West Midlands (TfWM).

Reacting to move, some drivers took to online platforms to express their disinterest in the planned proposals.

A user said: “I live in the Cotswolds at least five miles from any shops.

“There is no public transport.

“I do have a horse, maybe I have to ride him to the shops / doctor’s office / pharmacy????”

Other users questioned how a potential scheme would work and how it could have huge impacts on older drivers.

“Car sharing might work for those on scheduled trips for work.

“But how about at other times? Visiting families, friends etc. Even shopping.

“Most will not, and should not be dictated to about the way they travel.

“Pensioners need the freedom to go out when they can.

“And, will all MPs travel to work under a shared scheme?”

“These MPs are put in power by the people, they need to be changed.”

“This Government has gone power mad.”
