Nissan-Honda Merger, Mitsubishi Wants To Remain Independent

Published

on

If Nissan and Honda merge, Mitsubishi, which collaborates closely with Nissan, will not be included. This is reportedly stated by sources within the company.

Nissan remains part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, which indicates Mitsubishi’s involvement. They (Mitsubishi) do not intend to participate in the merger discussions. This information comes from anonymous sources speaking to the typically well-informed Automotive News Europe. Previously, there were discussions about Mitsubishi potentially joining the Japanese group later on. While such an inclusion remains a possibility down the line, the latest reports are focused solely on Honda and Nissan for now.

That makes sense because even now alliance partners Nissan and Mitsubishi are two separate companies. The glue that holds them together still comes from France and is called Renault. That explains why half of the European Mitsubishi range consists of slightly modified Renaults. Nissan was planning to follow suit with a new Micra based on the Renault 5, although it is possible that the upcoming merger will throw a spanner in the works.
