9 Million Passengers, Zero Accidents: Lagos Blue Line Marks 3 Years of Safe Operation

The First Phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line, managed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), has successfully served nine (9) million passengers in three years since the start of commercial operations on September 4, 2023.
During its first three years of operation, the Blue Line completed 80,000 trips, carried nine million passengers and recorded zero accidents, representing a rise of over four million commuters from the number recorded during its second anniversary and reflecting growing public acceptance of the rail system.

“3 years of seamless journeys, zero accidents, 99.5% reliability, 9 million passenger movements and 80,000 trips. Thank you for moving with us as we continue to set new standards for public transit in Lagos State. Happy 3rd Anniversary to the LRMT Blue Line!” LAMATA wrote on its official social media pages.

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had on Monday, September 4, 2023, flagged off the commercial operations of the first phase of the LRMT Blue Line with an inaugural ride on the electric-powered train from Marina Station to Mile 2.
Built and operated by the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), the First Phase of the LRMT Blue Line spans 13 kilometres from Marina to Mile 2. The journey between Marina and Mile 2 lasts about 18 minutes, including a 90-second stop at each station.

Since Monday, June 15, 2026, the daily frequency of trips on the Lagos Blue Line between Marina and Mile 2 has increased from 90 to 94 on Mondays to Saturdays, while the start of weekday and Saturday services has been shifted to 6:00 a.m. from the previous 6:30 a.m.
Managed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the Blue Line transported approximately 3.5 million passengers in 2025. By September 2025, two years after the launch of commercial operations, the rail system had served over five million passengers.
