Repairing Your Ageing EV Can Be More Expensive Than It Is Worth
Bosch’s Rupert Hellbacher warns that high battery costs may render EVs disposable, undermining sustainability and necessitating more affordable, independent repair solutions.
This economic reality poses a significant challenge to the fundamental sustainability goals of the green transition. If fully functional older vehicles are rendered obsolete due to prohibitively expensive battery replacements, the market risks treating complex automobiles as disposable consumer electronics. Bosch emphasizes that unless long-term repair strategies are urgently revised, consumers will be left with disposable vehicles rather than the durable, environmentally conscious transportation they were originally promised.
Rupert Hellbacher highlights that high EV repair costs stem from complex electrical architectures, software resets, and sensor recalibrations, leading to longer service times. Meanwhile, second-hand EV buyers often focus too much on battery health, ignoring more common, costly issues like suspension failures and electrical glitches that pose greater financial risks.
Plug-in hybrids suffer from rapid battery degradation due to their smaller packs and frequent daily charging, leading to more frequent service needs than fully electric vehicles.
To ensure the long-term viability of EVs, the automotive industry must support sustainable, long-term repairs. Manufacturers must empower independent mechanics with accessible diagnostic tools, standardized modular components, and the right to repair. Without these changes, premature battery replacement costs will continue to render EVs disposable, undermining their environmental promise and consumer confidence.
