EV Sales Boomed Last Month As Gas Prices Skyrocketed
Rising fuel prices are driving consumers toward hybrid and electric vehicles, reflecting a growing market shift toward electrification.
August EV sales rose 2.5% from July, though they remain 46.9% lower than last year’s tax-credit-driven peak. Tesla continues to lead the market with nearly 41,000 units sold, followed by Toyota, which saw a 34.9% sales surge to 4,964 units.
The average transaction price for new electric vehicles continued its downward trend, declining by 1.3 percent in August and 2.8 percent year-over-year. While these prices remain higher than those of traditional internal combustion vehicles, they are steadily approaching parity, with average costs currently at $54,754 and $49,907, respectively.
Used EV sales surged 25.9% in August to 44,350 units, driven by an influx of affordable off-lease inventory. While the average price dropped 1% to $37,441, it remains 8.2% higher year-over-year. Tesla continues to lead the market with a 30% share, followed by strong growth from Nissan and Kia.
The Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, and Ford Mustang Mach-E remain the most popular choices among consumers. According to data from Cox Automotive, these specific models experienced the most significant month-over-month increases in sales volume.
