Audi A3 Celebrates 30 Years With More Than 6 Million Cars Produced Since 1996

Audi is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the A3, marking three decades since the German luxury automaker unveiled the model at the 1996 Paris Motor Show. The A3 helped establish the premium compact-car segment, where it competes with rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
The Audi compact car combines everyday practicality with premium features and sporty performance. According to Audi, more than six million A3 models have rolled off production lines, making it one of the most successful model lines in the brand’s history.

First-generation Audi A3 (8L): 1996–2003
The first-generation A3, known internally as the 8L, arrived as a three-door hatchback with a distinctive coupé-like profile. The five-door version and the performance-focused S3 joined the lineup in early 1999.
Second-generation Audi A3 (8P): 2003–2013
The second-generation A3 (8P), launched in 2003, brought more interior space, while the A3 Sportback and A3 Cabriolet followed in 2004 and 2008, respectively. In 2011, the RS 3 Sportback raised the performance stakes with a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine producing 335 hp.

Third-generation Audi A3 (8V): 2012–2020
The third-generation A3 (8V) debuted in 2012 on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform. The lineup expanded to include a sedan in 2013 and the A3 Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid in 2014, marking an important step towards electrification.
Fourth-generation Audi A3 (8Y): 2020–present
Introduced in 2020, the fourth-generation A3 (8Y) brought sharper styling and available 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The performance-oriented RS 3 followed in 2021, featuring a rear torque splitter designed to enhance handling and cornering performance.

In 2024, Audi expanded the family with the A3 allstreet, a crossover-inspired variant offering three centimetres of additional ground clearance over the A3 Sportback. The S3 also received significant upgrades, including revised chassis technology and quattro all-wheel drive.
Today, the A3 range includes Sportback, Sedan and allstreet body styles, alongside the S3 and RS 3 performance models. A variety of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains reflects the nameplate’s continued evolution to meet different customer needs.
