Hyundai’s Strategy To Overtake Tesla Begins With Millions Of Vehicles
Hyundai and Kia plan to use their global fleet of seven million vehicles to collect real-world driving data for advanced driver-assistance systems, mirroring Tesla’s strategy to accelerate their delayed AI development.
Hyundai’s data flywheel lags behind Tesla, delaying its proprietary driver-assistance software to 2029. To catch up, Hyundai is partnering with Nvidia to deploy Level 2+ and 2++ autonomous systems by 2028. These systems will use cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors—avoiding LiDAR for now to remain cost-effective while maintaining human supervision. Hyundai plans to integrate LiDAR later for Level 3 capabilities as it works to build a competitive data engine.
The substantial volume of driving data Hyundai aims to leverage is subject to several critical considerations. This information must be systematically collected from connected vehicles, meticulously cleaned and labeled, and subsequently integrated into the training processes for autonomous driving systems. It is evident that data volume serves as the fundamental raw material rather than the finished product. Given that Tesla and various Chinese competitors have refined these processes for years, Hyundai’s stated 2033 target to surpass these rivals underscores its current position as an industry follower. Ultimately, Hyundai is not merely seeking to develop a competitor to Tesla; rather, it is focused on building the robust data infrastructure necessary to achieve that ambition.
