Hyundai Sued Over Faulty Driver Monitoring Systems Causing Sudden Braking
Most new vehicles include Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for safety, but these technologies often lack reliability, as seen in ongoing issues with Tesla’s Autopilot.
Hyundai is currently facing a new lawsuit concerning alleged defects in its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). According to ClassAction.org, the Korean automaker is being sued over its Direct Driver Monitoring System (DDMS), which reportedly misinterprets driver head and eye positions. This malfunction purportedly leads to frequent false warnings, instances of sudden braking, and the unexpected deactivation of features such as cruise control. The lawsuit encompasses several models, specifically the 2024–2026 Santa Fe, 2025–2026 Ioniq 5, 2025–2026 Tucson, 2025–2026 Santa Cruz, and the 2026 Palisade.
The automaker faces a lawsuit over its Direct Driver Monitoring System (DDMS), which allegedly triggers false warnings and unintended braking. Plaintiffs claim the system misinterprets driver head movements, eyewear, and seating positions. Despite a January 2025 bulletin acknowledging these limitations, Hyundai reportedly instructed dealers to advise owners on seating and eyewear adjustments rather than offering repairs.
Hyundai also addressed a separate recall this year for over 421,000 vehicles involving faulty Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) systems. While distinct from the current DDMS lawsuit, both incidents highlight the reliability challenges facing modern driver-assistance technology. As the IIHS incorporates stricter safety ratings, automakers face mounting pressure to refine these systems despite ongoing concerns about their performance.
