The Next-Generation Mazda BT-50 Is In Development Phase
The Mazda BT-50 continues to be an important model for this Japanese automaker. Increased competition in the mid-size pickup segment has prompted Mazda to consider developing a new generation, which should appear in the next few years.
The third generation of the Mazda BT-50 was introduced in 2020, and the refresh of the model followed at the end of 2024. This model is based on the architecture of the Isuzu D-Max model, and features a design characteristic of the Mazda brand – both externally and internally – and is currently offered exclusively with turbo-diesel engines without electric assistance.
Australian journalists spoke with Vinesh Bindi, the general manager of Mazda Australia, who confirmed that the new generation BT-50 model is in the development phase. He did not provide details on the technical specifications, but confirmed that the vehicle could probably be found on the roads around 2028.
Eiji Kimoto, Mazda’s chief designer, who was in charge of the appearance of the current model BT-50, says of the upcoming pickup: “I’m not allowed to say much about the future product, but I can tell you – look forward to it.”
And the next generation BT-50 model will probably be the result of the partnership. After all, the first two generations were developed in cooperation with Ford, while the third one moved to the platform of the Isuzu company, Carscoops reminds.
Mazda could continue cooperation with Isuzu and develop a new model alongside the new generation D-Max model. Another option is the expansion of cooperation with the Chinese manufacturer Changan, after the development projects of the 6e sedan and the CX-6e SUV. Changan already offers a pickup called the Hunter K50, which uses a range-extender drive system.
Either way, the next-generation BT-50 is expected to adopt the brand’s updated design language. It is also expected that Mazda will give its pickup model a higher-class interior, in line with the aspiration to position the entire offer in the premium segment.
Back in 2025, the head of Mazda’s Australian arm stated that there would be no all-electric version of the BT-50 for the foreseeable future, despite the availability of the related Isuzu D-Max EV. He also did not see plug-in hybrid pickup vehicles (PHEVs) as a threat, adding that diesel engines are likely to remain on offer. However, the local director says he will let the market show whether there is demand for electrified pickups, and will then consider available options. It can be concluded that Mazda could offer certain electrified powertrain options for the next-generation BT-50. If they keep the partnership with Isuzu, they will likely use a “mild” hybrid diesel system, while cooperation with Changan would likely result in a range-extender option. This would allow this pickup truck to meet market demand while meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations and potentially expanding its market presence.
