The EU Is Preparing A New Discussion! Petrol (And Diesel) Will Get Even More Space?!
The European Union has postponed a vote on an agreement that would have further relaxed the ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2035.
The largest political group in the European Parliament, the EPP, wants to amend the agreement so that CO2 emissions from the car industry are reduced “only” by 80 percent by 2035 compared to 2021 levels. The current target is 90 percent. But before December 2025, that figure was 100 percent, which effectively meant a complete ban on the sale of new gasoline (or diesel) cars. Now Der Spiegel reports that the EU has postponed another vote in the Transport Committee.
After reaching an agreement in December 2025, the European Commission said it expected a significant proportion of new cars could be equipped with an internal combustion engine by 2035. But it seems that this is not enough for some members of the EPP group. EPP MP Jens Gieseke, who is also a member of the Transport Committee, told Der Spiegel that they are pushing for an 80 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions from 2021. Specifically, that means a lot more vehicles with internal combustion engines on the road. Among other things, because there will be more climate-friendly fuels and materials in 2035, which will significantly increase the possibilities for the use of internal combustion engines compared to the Commission’s proposal for a 90 percent reduction, claim the proponents.
