Toyota Announces New Variant Of The Hilux By 2028
Toyota announced the production of a hydrogen-powered Hilux FCEV for the European market by 2028, offering it alongside diesel and battery-electric versions as part of its multi-pathway strategy.
Following the successful development of several prototypes based on the previous generation of the vehicle, the automaker has officially released the first teaser for the new Hilux FCEV.
Although the vehicle showcases a distinct lighting signature featuring segmented daytime running lights, the dark teaser image obscures any significant stylistic deviations from the standard Hilux. Consequently, it remains unclear whether the model will incorporate the specific bumper design and closed-off grille characteristic of the battery-electric variant.
While Toyota has yet to disclose full technical specifications, the company has confirmed a targeted WLTP range exceeding 248 miles (400 km) and a towing capacity of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs). In comparison, the Hilux BEV provides a WLTP range of 257 km (159 miles) and supports a towing capacity between 1,600 and 2,000 kg (3,530–4,410 lbs), depending on the specific configuration and local regulations.
Despite its efficient five-minute refueling, the Hilux FCEV targets a niche market due to Europe’s limited hydrogen infrastructure of 179 stations and the expected premium pricing compared to diesel or battery-electric versions.
Toyota debuted the Hilux H2 prototype in 2022 using a Mirai-derived fuel cell powertrain. By 2024, 10 prototypes were undergoing UK testing, featuring three chassis-integrated hydrogen tanks, a rear-mounted battery, and an electric motor producing 180 hp and 300 Nm of torque, achieving a 600 km range.
