Volvo is preparing the biggest production offensive in its 99-year history. The Swedish manufacturer plans to introduce as many as 13 completely new models by the end of 2030, and the goal is quite ambitious: to increase profitability and double the market share.

It will not only be about electric cars. Volvo will develop electric models and a new generation of hybrids in parallel, considering that some customers are not yet ready to completely give up SUS engines.

The announcement comes after a series of innovations in the existing offer. Volvo recently refreshed the XC40, EX40, EC40 and XC60 models, while the XC60 and XC90 received new plug-in hybrid versions with significantly greater electric range.

Seven new models are coming to the West

Unlike those redesigned cars, we are talking about 13 completely new models. Seven of them are intended for Western markets, including Europe and North America, and six for the Chinese market.

Especially interesting is the confirmation that Volvo will not just fill existing categories. The company announces its entry into new segments, which opens up space for models that are not currently on offer. One of the possibilities that has already been discussed is the return of the station wagon, a type of car that has been almost synonymous with Volvo for decades, but the company has not yet confirmed a specific new station wagon model.

What the Volvo of the next decade will look like, we will see more clearly already in 2027. Then a new concept will be presented that will herald the evolution of the brand’s design language. The new direction will be overseen by a team led by Thomas Ingenlath, who is returning as Volvo’s chief design officer after seven years at the helm of Polestar.

It will use Geely technology more

Cars destined for Europe and other Western markets will use the SPA2 and SPA3 architectures. The EX90 and ES90 are already based on the former, while the electric EX60 uses the newer SPA3 platform. The plan is also to use the HuginCore platform.

Models for the Chinese market will use common platforms and technology developed in cooperation with Volvo’s parent company Geely.

It is the cooperation within the Geely Group that will become important. The goal is to increase the share of common components among cars of different brands within the group from the current approximately 10 to as much as 30 percent by 2030. Such an approach should help reduce development and production costs at a time when the automotive industry is investing huge amounts in electrification and software.

“Our salons will look completely different in 2030.”

President and CEO of Volvo, Håkan Samuelsson, described the scale of the planned changes quite clearly.

“Our showrooms will look completely different in 2030,” he said, adding that Volvo wants to become “the leading premium car brand.”

The strategy is based on four main areas: an offer adapted to different world markets, electrification, greater cooperation with Geely, and the expansion of the services that Volvo offers to customers.

With the third generation of the extended-range hybrid, Volvo plans to continue with regular remote software upgrades of the car and wants to simplify the purchase process itself. It announces a more transparent offer, special promotions, and pre-configured versions that customers could get faster.
