3-minute Battery Swap Or 5-minute Charging? China’s EV Drivers Face A New Choice
China, the world’s largest auto market, is entering a new phase in the EV speed race as automakers compete to make battery replenishment almost as quick as filling a petrol-powered car. The latest battle pits a 3-minute battery swapping against ultra-fast charging that is rapidly approaching the same timeframe.
NIO has built its reputation around battery swapping, allowing its Swap Station system to automatically replace a depleted battery in a compatible EV with a fully charged one in under three minutes. This allows drivers to resume their journey almost immediately without waiting for a conventional charging session.

Since introducing the technology in 2018, NIO has continued expanding its battery-swap network. The company celebrated a major milestone in February 2026 after completing its 100 millionth battery swap, with the company saying the service had saved users a combined 83.41 million hours.
Ultra-fast Charging Rapidly Closing The Gap
BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, which debuted in May in the $134,000 Denza Z9GT, can reportedly charge from 10 to 70 per cent in just five minutes, from 10 to 97 per cent in nine minutes and from 20 to 97 per cent in 12 minutes, using BYD’s Flash Charging technology.

CATL has pushed the technology even further, unveiling a system capable of charging an EV from 10 to 80 per cent in 3 minutes and 44 seconds under its stated conditions. That figure potentially puts ultra-fast charging within the same time range as battery swapping.
Geely has also joined the race with its fast-charging technology that it says can charge Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001 EVs from 10% to 70% in 4 minutes 30 seconds, and from 10% to 97% in 8 minutes 40 seconds. The development highlights how quickly Chinese automakers are narrowing the time advantage historically associated with battery swapping.
Unlike NIO’s battery-swapping system, which replaces a depleted battery with a fully charged one, BYD, Geely and CATL’s ultra-fast charging technologies allow drivers to keep their existing battery pack and replenish it by plugging the vehicle into a high-power charger.
3-Minute Battery Swap Or 5-Minute Charge? China’s EV Drivers Face A New Choice
For Chinese EV drivers, neither technology is necessarily destined to completely replace the other. As both systems continue to improve, the practical choice could ultimately depend not only on speed, but also on infrastructure availability, compatibility, convenience and the overall ownership experience.
