Chinese automotive giant Geely Auto Group has introduced a new ultra-fast AI-driven charging system that can recharge an electric vehicle (EV) from 10% to 70% in just 4 minutes and 30 seconds, bringing charging times closer to the convenience of refuelling a petrol-powered car.

Called Geely Smart Charging, the new system combines artificial intelligence, high-power charging hardware and advanced battery technology to deliver faster charging while managing heat and battery health.

The brainpower behind this mega-fast performance is Xingrui PowerMind, an AI energy model jointly developed with Chinese AI company StepFun. The system coordinates the vehicle, battery, charging station, cloud, electricity grid and energy-storage system throughout the charging process.

The new AI-powered charging technology debuts alongside the Fifth-Generation Geely Smart Charging Station, which delivers peak charging power of up to 2,250 kW (2.25 MW), as well as the Next-Gen Ultra Short Blade Battery.

During real-world testing, batteries used in the high-performance electric vehicles Lynk & Co 10 sedan and Zeekr 001 Shooting Brake charged from 10% to 70% in 4 minutes and 30 seconds, and from 10% to 97% in 8 minutes and 40 seconds.

Rather than reacting only after temperatures rise, Geely says the new AI-powered charging technology uses algorithms to predict battery temperatures up to 30 seconds ahead and dynamically adjust charging power.

To tackle long-term cell degradation, Geely introduced lithium-ion pulse restoration technology, which uses micro-pulse currents to reverse lithium plating damage and help extend battery cycle life by up to 20%.

The development comes as Chinese automakers, including NIO and BYD, along with battery giant CATL, accelerate the race to make EV charging nearly as quick as conventional refuelling, with offerings such as battery swapping and ultra-fast charging.
