Acura Pauses Production Of The MDX Type-S

Acura is pausing production of the MDX Type S after the 2026 model year, citing uncertainty over 2027 EPA emissions regulations. The brand plans to incorporate Type S-style features into other MDX trims while the future of its turbocharged V6 remains in limbo.

The automaker is discontinuing the MDX Type S after 2026, citing uncertainty over 2027 EPA emissions standards. While the brand plans to migrate premium Type S styling and features to other MDX trims, it remains unclear if these changes will compensate for the loss of the 355-hp turbocharged V6 engine, especially as other trims continue to rely on a 290-hp naturally aspirated V6.

The Environmental Protection Agency finalized new Tier 4 pollutant standards for light- and medium-duty vehicles in March 2024, with implementation scheduled for the 2027 model year. Although the EPA has proposed delaying the Tier 4 phase-in until 2029, Tier 3 requirements will remain enforceable throughout 2027 and 2028. While these mandates are achievable, the MDX Type S’s turbocharged V6 is unique to that specific model within the Acura lineup, making it more challenging and costly to align with the brand’s overall U.S. emissions targets.

Furthermore, the Tier 4 regulations—should they proceed as planned—introduce more stringent requirements for onboard diagnostic software, necessitating significant technical adjustments for the 3.0-liter engine. Should the EPA formally postpone these regulations until 2029, Acura may consider reintroducing the turbocharged variant; however, until federal policy is finalized, the brand remains constrained by ongoing regulatory uncertainty.
