The Hyundai Ioniq 9 Has Been Recalled Again
Hyundai’s rear-seat safety issues began with the 2026 Palisade’s third-row seats, triggering a stop-sale order that also affected the Kia Telluride due to their shared power-folding mechanism.
The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 is being recalled because its second-row power-folding seats may fail to detect obstacles, posing a safety risk. This defect, which affects Limited, Calligraphy, and Calligraphy Design trims, causes seats to continue moving even when someone or something is in their path. Hyundai is issuing a free software update to address the anti-pinch logic.
The automaker is initiating a recall of 5,360 units of the 2026 Ioniq 9 SUV due to a software defect within the power-folding second-row seat mechanism. The system fails to adequately detect obstacles, thereby posing a potential injury risk to passengers. To remediate this issue, Hyundai will provide a complimentary software update to correct the anti-pinch logic, with official owner notifications scheduled to commence in November.
Five complaints, including two minor injuries, regarding 2026 Ioniq 9 power seats before the official recall were recorded. While no crashes occurred, owner forums had documented the issue for months, with reports of seats failing to stop for passengers or obstructions. One owner described “near misses” where seats nearly injured their children, prompting a dealership investigation.
Hyundai advises caution with second-row seats until the software update is installed, especially near children. Dealers will update the seat controller’s anti-pinch logic for free, with some models receiving it via Bluelink OTA. Owner notifications begin in November, and previous repair costs are eligible for reimbursement.
