BMW Offers Employees Up To $730,000 In Voluntary Severance Packages
BMW launched its voluntary departure portal in mid-October 2026; however, the platform experienced immediate technical difficulties due to an overwhelming influx of employees seeking to review their individual severance packages.
Following reports from German media, the company temporarily suspended new applications due to an overwhelming influx of interest in the program. Some severance packages reportedly exceed €650,000 (approximately $730,000). BMW aims to eliminate roughly 8,000 positions by the end of 2027, and the significant financial incentives offered appear to be driving this high level of employee participation.
According to reports from the German business daily Handelsblatt, BMW has provided approximately 50,000 employees with access to a portal for reviewing individualized severance packages. The internal platform experienced significant technical difficulties due to a surge in traffic immediately following its launch.
Handelsblatt, having obtained a confidential sample termination agreement, notes that while some reports indicate potential payouts reaching €650,000, this figure represents the high end of individual cases rather than a standard offer. A BMW spokesperson has declined to verify these specific figures, noting that most eligible staff should anticipate compensation well below that amount.
The voluntary departure program offers employees two exit windows: March 31, 2027, or October 31, 2027. Those who elect to depart by the earlier date are reportedly eligible for an additional “Turbo Bonus” designed to accelerate the workforce reduction. The program also offers flexible compensation options, allowing participants to choose from lump-sum payments, installments, retirement savings contributions, direct insurance payments, or a combination. The program is scheduled to conclude on October 31, 2027.
BMW’s severance depends on salary, age, and tenure, so the top payout of €650,000 is limited to long-serving, senior employees. Those turning 55 by October 2027 may also qualify for retirement-level benefits. To reward loyalty, some departing staff retain vehicle discounts. These buyouts support BMW’s goal to cut 8,000 jobs by 2027, aligning with industry trends seen at Porsche and Jaguar Land Rover.
