Interest In Manual Gearbox BMWs Is Growing

Published

on

BMW M boss Frank van Meel recently revealed that 50 percent of U.S. M2 buyers choose a manual transmission. This high take rate, likely driven by concerns over the gearbox’s future, directly influenced the development of the limited-edition M3 CS Handschalter.

According to Frank van Meel, BMW analyzed the strong demand for manual transmissions in M-series vehicles, particularly the M2, which served as a catalyst for the development of the North American-exclusive M3 CS Handschalter. Emphasizing that rear-wheel drive paired with a manual gearbox remains the quintessential configuration for automotive purists, van Meel noted that the limited edition was met with overwhelming demand and sold out almost immediately. While BMW has yet to disclose specific production numbers for this model, the company’s success with this initiative suggests that future limited-edition manual vehicles may remain a strategic priority.

BMW is pivoting toward offering manual transmissions exclusively in low-volume, high-end special editions rather than mainstream models, as engineering constraints and evolving performance demands make traditional gearboxes increasingly difficult to sustain.

Frank van Meel acknowledges high demand for manual BMWs but cites engineering challenges with high-torque, modern M cars. Consequently, manual gearboxes will likely shift from mainstream options to rare, exclusive special editions, keeping the prospect of a manual M2 CS alive as a niche offering for enthusiasts.
