BMW is set to introduce the enhanced Exit Warning function as standard across the Neue Klasse following its introduction on the all-new iX3. This active safety feature aims to help prevent “dooring” accidents, which accounted for roughly 8% (392) of all bicycle collisions recorded in Berlin in 2024.

With its active door-opening delay, the enhanced Exit Warning safety feature on the all-new iX3 could help prevent occupants from accidentally opening a door directly into the path of an approaching cyclist, vehicle or other road user.

Unlike conventional systems that simply warn occupants of approaching traffic, the BMW iX3 can temporarily delay the opening of a door when the system detects an immediate collision risk. The feature uses side-mounted radar sensors to monitor the area around the parked vehicle.

When a cyclist or another road user is approaching from behind, the electronic door lock can briefly prevent the door from opening until the danger has passed. BMW says the system is particularly useful in busy urban environments where cyclists often travel close to parked cars.

“The broad rollout of our new active safety functions as standard is based on our ‘Smart, Symbiotic, Safe’ philosophy. We bring drivers and assistance systems together into a cooperative system that works in harmony,” said Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, BMW’s Senior Vice President of Driving Experience Development.

He added that BMW’s assistance systems are designed to work as “quiet, intelligent companions in the background, discreet yet highly effective when it matters most in critical situations.”

The BMW iX3 is the first production model from the company’s Neue Klasse generation to receive the technology. BMW says the enhanced safety system will also feature on future models, including the new i3, X5 and the flagship 7 Series ultra-luxury sedan.
