Rare Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse ‘Jean-Pierre Wimille’ Sells For Record $5.44M

A rare 2014 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse ‘Jean-Pierre Wimille’ just changed hands for a staggering CHF 4.505 million ($5.44 million) at RM Sotheby’s Zurich Auction on Saturday, September 26, smashing its pre-sale estimate of CHF 2.4–CHF 2.8 million ($2.90–$3.38 million) in the process.

One of just three examples built as part of Bugatti’s ‘Les Légendes de Bugatti’ series, the rare Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse ‘Jean-Pierre Wimille’ was created to honour Jean-Pierre Wimille, the French racing driver who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice for Bugatti.

This particular example, chassis number VF9SV25244M795063, was the first model in Bugatti’s six-part Legends series, with each edition limited to just three cars. It was delivered new to Dubai in 2014 before subsequently passing through German and Swiss ownership.

Its exterior combines specially developed Bleu Wimille paint with exposed dark-blue carbon fibre, drawing inspiration from the Type 57G Tank that Wimille drove to Bugatti’s first overall Le Mans victory in 1937. The outline of the Circuit de la Sarthe also sits prominently on the underside of the active rear wing.

The tribute continues inside, with Bleu Wimille and dark Lake Blue leather, Wimille’s signature embroidered into the headrests, while the steering wheel and gear selector are decorated in the French national colours. A representation of the Le Mans circuit is also incorporated into the cabin.

Under its bodywork is Bugatti’s 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine producing 1,200 horsepower. The Grand Sport Vitesse can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in just 2.6 seconds and reach a claimed top speed of 410 km/h—making it the fastest production roadster in the world at the time.

With its extremely limited production and a low mileage of only 3,766 kilometres when catalogued for the auction, the ‘Jean-Pierre Wimille’ Veyron has now added another notable result to the growing auction history of Bugatti’s modern hypercars.
