The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised Nigerians to embrace cycling as an alternative means of transportation amidst fuel subsidy removal in the country.

Oyo State Sector Commander, Mr Joshua Adekanye, gave the advice on Saturday June 3rd in Ibadan at the celebration of this year’s 2023 World Bicycle Day.

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly had in April 2018, declared 3 June of every year as World Bicycle Day to celebrate the tradition of cycling and its significant role in keeping our health fit.

According to the FRSC boss, it is advisable for the general public to make use of non-motorised transportation like bicycles now that the fuel subsidy has been removed.

In addition to being cheaper, he urged the citizenry to embrace circling as this will help in eliminating carbon emissions released into the atmosphere by vehicles.

“Use of bicycle is economically cheap because the cost of a bicycle is not as expensive as using a car or motorcycle,” he said.

Speaking on the health benefits, Adekanye said that cycling, not only improves physical strength but also helps reduce body fat “and keep the heart healthy”.

“Cycling may help prevent and manage medical conditions; helps in improving mental health and reduces stress, among other benefits, ” the sector commander said.
