Someone Just Paid $51.7m To Own A Classic 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Dubbed ‘The Holy Grail Of All Collector Cars’
Someone just paid $51.7 million to own a classic 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO during RM Sotheby’s auction in New York.
Whopping price makes the 250 GTO dubbed ‘the holy grail of all collector cars’ the most expensive Ferrari sold at auction.
It smashes the previous record of £39.5m for a Ferrari, which was held by another 250 GTO auctioned in California in 2018.
But the $51.7m still trails the record of £115.7m paid for a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe at Sotheby’s sale last year.

A classic 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO dubbed ‘the holy grail of all collector cars’ just went for a whopping price of £42 million ($51.7million) during RM Sotheby’s auction in New York.
Dressed in deep red racing livery, the chassis number 3765 is considered the rarest example of Ferrari’s most celebrated classic car as it was the only 250 GTO ever officially raced by Scuderia Ferrari.

The premium price paid to own it smashed the previous record of £39.5 million for a Ferrari, which was held by another 250 GTO auctioned by Sotheby’s in California in 2018.

Reacting to the sale, Gord Duff, Sotheby’s Global Head of Auctions, said :
“Celebrating this sale during Sotheby’s marquee week highlights the unparalleled stature of this Ferrari as one of the world’s most desirable objects.
“The result, achieved through collaboration between Ferrari, RM Sotheby’s, and Sotheby’s, echoes our mutual pursuit of perfection; mirroring the very ethos Enzo Ferrari embodied when designing this car.”

“Fetching £42 million, this transaction adds a new chapter to a vehicle with an unmatched legacy. Now, it ranks among the most expensive cars sold at auction, a true testament to its singular place in history.”
While $51.7million paid makes the classic 1962 250 GTO the most expensive Ferrari sold at auction, the price tag still trails record of £115.7 million ($144 Million), which was raked in by a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe at Sotheby’s sale in Stuttgart, Germany, last year.
