But today, Mercedes-Benz has shut down the €250 million car plant in Moscow following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Before its shut down, the factory produces 25,000 vehicles per year for the Russian market, including E-Class and SUVs.
Prior to the war in Ukraine, Mercedes-Benz cars was one of the most popular vehicles in Russia.
The G-Class SUV and the flagship S-Class ultra-luxury sedan had always been a favourite among Russia’s wealthy elite.
A throwback video shows the moment Vladimir Putin’s eye-catching Aurus Senat L700 limousine rolled into the new Mercedes-Benz plant near Moscow, ahead of opening the massive facility in 2019.
After shaking hands with Putin, one of Mercedes-Benz representatives commented on the Russian-made bunker on wheels, telling Putin in German that he has a “beautiful car”.
Vladimir Putin responded in German, proudly saying: “Ja, sehr schon” (Yes, [it’s] very beautiful).
During the opening ceremony outside Moscow, Vladimir Putin said “We will support such projects in the future for sure. Mercedes cars will be popular with Russian consumers for sure”.
But today, Mercedes-Benz has shut down the €250 million car plant in Moscow, after joining several western companies and automakers in pulling out of sanctions-hit Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Before its shut down, the factory, which employed 1,000 people produces 25,000 vehicles per year for the Russian market, including Mercedes E-Class and several SUVs.
