The Tesla Cybertruck Turns Out To Be A Failure

Elon Musk once claimed that demand for the Cybertruck was “beyond measure” and that the company had secured more than a million reservations. Today, it is certain that very few buyers are interested in this electric pickup.

While the Cybertruck was expected to dominate its segment, it’s now even second behind the Ford F-150 Lightning, according to Auto News, citing registration data from S&P Global Mobility. According to this source, 2,598 F-150 Lightnings were registered in March compared to 2,170 Cybertrucks. Although it is a difference of only 428 cars, it is a big victory for Ford and a huge defeat for Tesla.

This is not an isolated statistical case. In the US, 7,913 electric Ford pickups were registered during the first quarter. This means that even at the level of the year, the F-150 Lightning is 787 cars ahead of Tesla (7126). Also, the number of only 7126 cars sold in three months clearly outlines what this year’s Cybertruck sales could be. Instead of hundreds of thousands of cars sold, the reality is several tens of thousands per year.

The reasons for the Cybertruck’s failure are obvious because the production model did not come close to fulfilling Tesla’s earlier promises. Back in 2019, Tesla claimed the starting price would be $39,900 for the entry-level rear-wheel-drive variant. But today, the cheapest rear-wheel drive model is offered for $69,990. Moreover, today the rear-wheel drive variant costs more than the announced price of the four-wheel drive model. The starting price of this model was expected to be $49,900, but today it is selling for $79,990. Of course, we should not forget numerous other unfulfilled promises. Let’s say the Cybertruck will be able to float for a short time or be bulletproof.

Things are not going well for Tesla or Cybertruck, and it certainly doesn’t help that Elon Musk and his company have become very unpopular due to Musk’s entry into politics. Will the Cybertruck ever recover, or will it go down in history as one of the biggest failures of the modern auto industry? There are more and more indications that speak in favor of this second possibility.
