2.1 Million Passengers Traveled Via Nigerian Rail In 2023, Generated N4.4 Billion – NBS
2.1 million passengers traveled via Nigerian rail in 2023, a decrease of -32.07% compared to the 3.2 million passengers in 2022.
Volume of goods/cargos transported stood at 317,244 tons, up by 102.04%, compared to 157,024 tons recorded in 2022.
In terms of revenue, N4.4b was received from passengers, while N1.07b was collected from goods/cargos conveyed.

A total of 2,182,388 passengers travelled via Nigerian rail system between January and December of 2023, according to the latest rail transportation data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) .
This represents a growth rate decline of -32.07 percent, compared to the 3,212,948 passengers that traveled through the Nigerian rail during the corresponding period of 2022.

During the same period, NBS data shows that the volume of goods/cargos transported through rail stood at 317,244 tons, up by 102.04%, compared to 157,024 tons recorded in 2022.
In terms of revenue generation, N4,426,495,760 was received from passengers during the reference period, showing a decrease of 2.6% from the N4,546,342,056 recorded in the previous year.
Similarly, N1,079,290,411 was collected from goods/cargos conveyed through rail in 2023, which was up by 144.32%, compared to the N441,744,994 collected in 2022.
In addition, other income receipts amounted to N565,843,550 – indicating a decline of 6.9% (-N41,957,112), compared to the N607,800,662 collected in 2022.
