Mercedes Recalls 27,000 2021-2024 S580 And Mercedes-Maybach S580 Over Potential Engine Failure - autojosh

Mercedes-Benz recalls 27,000+ 2021-2024 S580 and Mercedes-Maybach S580 sedans over potential engine failure.

Flagship sedans recalled due to a potential risk of the engine control unit software causing the engine to overheat or stall.

Both vehicles use an identical twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, which is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system.

It comes as Mercedes plans to cut production of the S-Class due to falling demand for its flagship ultra luxury limousine.

Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 27,000 examples of its flagship sedans due to a potential risk of the engine control unit (ECU) software causing the engine to overheat or stall.

The recall affects 26,260 examples of the Mercedes-Benz S580 sedans built from 2021 to 2024 and 930 units of the Mercedes-Maybach S580 limousines from the same model years.

The price of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz S-class starts at $118,450 and goes up to $129,300 while the fancier and more luxurious Mercedes-Maybach S580 limousine starts at $203,500.

Both vehicles use an identical twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, which is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system. According to an NHTSA report on Friday, an engine stall can increase the risk of a crash while an overheated engine can increase the risk of a fire.

To remedy the issue on the affected Mercedes S580s and Mercedes-Maybach S580s, dealers will update the ECU software free of charge after the respective owners are notified.

It comes as Mercedes-Benz plans to cut production of the Mercedes S-Class at its state-of-the-art “Factory 56” plant in Sindelfingen due to falling demand for its flagship ultra luxury limousine.

Sales of the S-Class fell 25% in the first 6 months of 2024 to 28,100 units while the German car giant sold just 7,000 units (-25 per cent) of the EQS electric variant, compared to the 14,100 units sold in the same period in 2023.
