LAMATA Begins Red Line Trial Run Ahead Of Start Of Passenger Operations In The Last Quarter Of 2024
After weeks of test runs, LAMATA begins Red Line trial run ahead of start of passenger operations in the last quarter of 2024.
Test run carried out with 43 HST train that can reach 125 mph. Its operational speed is currently limited to 50 mph.
Red Line Project is anticipated to significantly impact the growth of Lagos’s economic activity and overall quality of life.
It is expected to reduce travelï times between Agbado and Oyingbo to just 55 minutes from close to three
hours.

After weeks of engineering, speed and weight tests, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced the commencement of trial runs for the Red Line Rail project, ahead of start of passenger operations in the last quarter of 2024.
There will be 4 trips per day during the trial runs for the Red Line Rail project – 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, according to Jubril Gawat, a Senior Special Assistant on News Media to the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

This operational test run follows test runs that successfully simulated, demonstrated track sharing arrangement with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) involving all station officers and officials.
The test run was carried out with the British rail set class 43 HST train that offers comfortably seat 60 passengers per coach for shorter trips, and up to 150 people, including standing passengers, for intra-city commute.

While it has a regular service speed of 125 mph (201 km/h) and a absolute maximum speed of 148.5 mph (239.0 km/h), its operational speed is currently limited to 50 mph due to regulations set by the National Railway Corporation (NRC).
The Red Line Rail Project is anticipated to significantly impact the growth of Lagos’s economic activity and overall quality of life. It is expected to reduce travel times between Agbado and Oyingbo to just 55 minutes from close to three hours.
