The Tesla Cybercab Has Begun Transporting Passengers In Austin Texas
It’s been almost two years since the Tesla company introduced its autonomous Cybercab, and now it seems that it is preparing for the public launch of this vehicle, that is, its addition to the existing robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.
The company has been testing the Cybercab on public roads in recent months but so far has not allowed any members of the public to experience the self-driving car. Last month, it began allowing its employees to ride Cybercabs on private roads near its Austin headquarters.
Unnamed sources told The Information that, after testing with employees, the public launch of Cybercab is scheduled for this month. Before receiving approval to introduce the new electric vehicle to its robotaxi service, Tesla recently completed emergency training with emergency responders across Austin, specifically on how to handle Cybercab-related issues.
The company announced the imminent arrival of Cybercab to its robotaxi fleet this week, announcing that those who use the existing fleet before August 23 will be included in the selection to attend the launch event. The company states that the more rides someone completes, the more likely they are to receive an invitation. It remains to be seen if the invitation to the launch event will include a ride in the Cybercab.
While the addition of Cybercab to Tesla’s self-driving taxi service in Austin will be a big step for the company, it should be noted that the service is still small and hasn’t managed to achieve anywhere near the growth that Tesla boss Elon Musk promised. There are currently only 186 Model Ys in Tesla’s Austin fleet. Production of the Cybercab began in Texas in July, but series production isn’t expected to begin until next year, so it’s unlikely the fleet will be significantly expanded in the coming months.
Recent Cybercab prototypes have been seen with and without pedals and handlebars. There is no word on whether or not the cars that will be the first to be added to the fleet will have these traditional controls.
