Lamborghini Says It’s Not Bothered About China Yet

Lamborghini’s CEO remains unconcerned about Chinese EV supercar competition, citing a focus on hybrids over all-electric models due to low consumer demand.

In a recent interview with Auto Express, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann stated that the company does not perceive the rise of Chinese electric supercars as a competitive threat. Given that Lamborghini currently focuses on hybrid technology rather than fully electric powertrains, Winkelmann remarked:

‘Because they are doing electric cars, and if we say we are not doing electric cars for a reason, then there is also an idea behind how we look at our Chinese competitors or Chinese manufacturers.’

Lamborghini canceled its first EV to focus on hybrids, citing near-zero consumer demand. CEO Stephan Winkelmann previously delayed the project to 2029 before ultimately scrapping it, calling the investment financially irresponsible.

During the announcement of the electric vehicle project’s cancellation in February, CEO Stephan Winkelmann justified the decision by stating that investing in technology with negligible consumer demand would be financially irresponsible toward shareholders—a stance he maintains today. He further contends that current Chinese supercars lack the performance, auditory character, and emotional resonance defining Lamborghini’s hybrid lineup, though he acknowledges that Chinese manufacturers may eventually emerge as significant competitors to the brand.
