Lamborghini Says The Next-Generation Urus Is On The Way
Lamborghini has confirmed that the Urus will get a new generation and revealed that it will be powered by a V8 hybrid powertrain.
This continues the company’s current trend of moving away from electric vehicles and heavily investing in plug-in hybrid systems due to a “lack of emotion” towards electric powertrains. The striking Urus is the brand’s best-selling model, as it combines track-oriented performance with practicality for everyday driving.
Unlike other manufacturers, Lamborghini does not feel the need to launch an all-electric model. Its latest effort, the Lanzador Concept coupe SUV, was unveiled in 2023 as the marque’s first BEV model, but plans for a production electric car were shelved earlier this year. Instead, the Lanzador will come to life as a plug-in hybrid and become Lamborghini’s fourth model line in the role of a two-door grand tourer with a 2+2 seating configuration.
With sales stronger than ever before, Lamborghini has confirmed that the super-SUV will continue to be produced into the next generation.
“In any case, the new generation Urus will not be an electric car. We will follow the industry and use a V8 hybrid assembly,” said Cossalter, in charge of Lamborghini’s electrification efforts.
The newest member of the Urus family is the SE Performante, which develops more than 800 hp from this powertrain. It also has an electric range of 60 kilometers thanks to a 25.9 kWh battery.
Lamborghini also reaffirmed its belief that a hybrid is the best choice for this type of vehicle.
“I like the everyday usability with that much torque, but we didn’t compromise on comfort,” explained Cossalter.
This V8 engine is also used by Audi in the RS Q8, Porsche in the Cayenne Turbo and Bentley in the Bentayga. Lamborghini gave this engine its own character, such as raising the revs to 2,400 rpm when starting to create a more pronounced sound.
The Urus has matured into a product that can be used both on the track and on the road with a high level of comfort, but the latest SE Performante pushes the envelope more towards performance than any other SUV from the company. Carbon fiber has been used extensively to reduce mass compared to previous models, and even with the added aerodynamic downforce created by the hatches and spoilers, top speed remains the same as the standard SE model at 312 km/h.
The V8 powertrain is key to the driving experience. The new Akrapovic exhaust system is lighter and more exciting, and individual drive modes allow changing the amount of hybrid power sent to the wheels.
“When you’re in electric mode, people don’t recognize you as someone driving a Lamborghini, but when you switch to Corsa mode, the fun is there. It’s like driving a Revuelto,” Cossalter said.
