A bizarre video showing a BYD Tang SUV dragging its rear electric motor assembly while driving through a flooded road in China has gone viral on social media, sparking questions about the electric vehicle’s durability.

In the trending footage, the seven-seater all-electric performance SUV from BYD was seen moving slowly, with its rear electric motor dragging along the road after breaking away from its mounting points while fording the flooded street.

The unusual scene quickly attracted attention online, prompting BYD to explain that the Tang suffered severe underbody damage after striking a submerged object while driving through the flooded road.

According to CarNewsChina, BYD’s customer service said the rear motor assembly became detached following an underbody impact, maintaining that the damage was caused by an external collision rather than a manufacturing or product-quality defect.

The incident comes five days after Chinese car giant BYD warned motorists not to interpret the water-resistance ratings of its electric vehicles as permission to drive through deep floodwater.

Executive Vice President He Zhiqi had on July 8 stressed that while its Blade Battery is designed to withstand water ingress under specified conditions, submerged roads can conceal obstacles capable of causing serious mechanical damage.

The viral BYD Tang video therefore highlights the importance of following the manufacturer’s instructions, unlike the Yangwang U8, which BYD has marketed as being capable of floating and travelling through water for up to 30 minutes.

Offered in pure electric or plug-in hybrid setups, the BYD Tang features a striking “Dragon Face” exterior accented by sharp LED headlights. Its robust 108.8 kWh Blade Battery delivers 530 km of range for standard versions and over 670 km on the upscale Tang L.
