Chery-JLR Begins Production Of Freelander 8 Ahead Of Global Launch

The first mass-production Freelander 8 vehicles for the Chinese market officially rolled off the line on Thursday, July 30, at the Chery Jaguar Land Rover plant, ahead of the brand’s international debut in Abu Dhabi this September.

Slotting between the Defender 110 and Defender 130 in size, the Freelander 8 takes design inspiration from the iconic Freelander—the smallest model in JLR’s lineup, which was produced between 1997 and 2015.

At the ceremony, Yin Tongyue, Chairman of Chery Group, spoke about the role of international markets in the brand’s future growth, which plans to launch a new model every six months over the next three years, starting with the Freelander 8.

“Built on British Craftsmanship, Smart Confidence and All-Terrain Freedom, Freelander 8 marks the next chapter of Legend Reborn. With mass production underway, the brand is entering the next phase of its global journey,” the revived Freelander brand said in a statement.

Production of the new Freelander 8 will be handled at the facility by more than 1,100 robots and a fully automated body shop. Additionally, end-to-end digital quality traceability will ensure consistent manufacturing precision.

“Before leaving the production line, every Freelander 8 undergoes comprehensive validation, including battery sealing checks, ADAS calibration and heavy-rain simulation tests” the new Freelander brand said of the JV’s advanced manufacturing process and rigorous quality control.

While the vehicles under the “Freelander” brand will be designed by JLR, they will be powered exclusively by electrified Chery drivetrains and built by the Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR) joint venture in China.
