For The Umpteenth Time, Tesla Announces That The New Roadster Will Soon Begin Production

Ten years after its announcement, the delayed second-generation Tesla Roadster has become an unprecedented automotive myth.

Tesla first unveiled the second-gen Roadster in 2017, but it remains unreleased nearly a decade later. Despite Tesla design chief Franz von Holzhausen recently claiming it will be available “soon”, the lack of a specific timeline has sparked widespread skepticism due to the company’s history of missed production deadlines.

In early 2024, Tesla CEO Elon Musk reiterated plans to deliver the first units of the second-generation Roadster by the first half of 2025. However, this remains another unfulfilled promise, as the production model is still nowhere to be seen.

For context, Tesla initially projected that the Roadster, with an expected starting price of approximately 173,000 euros, would achieve a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 1.9 seconds, a top speed exceeding 400 km/h, and a range of nearly 1,000 kilometers. Given the company’s history of missed deadlines, these ambitious performance claims should be viewed with a degree of skepticism until the vehicle actually reaches the market.
