The Tesla Cybertruck Rated As One Of The Biggest Flops
Bloomberg compared the Cybertruck to the Ford Edsel, which for decades was the epitome of a failed car project.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has set extremely high expectations. He previously said the Cybertruck could reach an annual production of 250,000 vehicles. In its first full year of sales, the model reportedly reached about a sixth of that goal. According to Cox Automotive, Tesla sold 38,965 Cybertrucks in 2024. The following year, sales fell to 20,237 vehicles, a decrease of 48.1 percent.
By the end of May 2026, there were only 7,133 Cybertrucks registered in the US, according to data from S&P Global Mobility cited in the Bloomberg article. So, a new decline is on the way on an annual basis.
The Ford Edsel was launched in 1957 with high expectations. Ford expected to sell 200,000 cars in the first year, but only a third of the announced goal was achieved. Since then, the Edsel has been used as a textbook example of how even big car brands can get it completely wrong. Bloomberg’s point is that Cybertruck could be an even bigger failure, as measured by the gap between promise and reality.
