The Trump Administration Wants Ford To End China’s Relationship
The Trump administration, via Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, has urged Ford CEO Jim Farley to sever ties with Chinese firms CATL, Geely, and BYD due to national security concerns.
The Trump administration’s pressure on Ford to sever ties with Chinese firms like CATL, Geely, and BYD creates a collision between national security policy and the economic realities of the global automotive supply chain. While Washington pushes for immediate domestic independence, automakers warn that such transitions require years of development and that international partnerships remain essential for staying competitive in the EV market. Ford’s defiance suggests that legacy manufacturers will continue to balance regulatory friction against the practical, long-term need to maintain global supply chain efficiency.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized Ford’s reliance on CATL-licensed technology for its Michigan battery plant, citing the firm’s Pentagon-listed military ties, and questioned the company’s decision to produce the Lincoln Nautilus in China through 2030.
The administration also scrutinized Farley’s Detroit Auto Show proposal for domestic joint ventures, reflecting broader industry tensions as lobbyists push for a total ban on Chinese-connected vehicles. Ford rejected the regulatory pressure as a political stunt, asserting that its Michigan plant is fully American-owned and operated. The company further defended its strategy by highlighting its significant investments in domestic battery production, contrasting its local manufacturing efforts with competitors still reliant on foreign technology.
Political rhetoric often ignores the logistical challenges of domestic supply chains. Establishing them requires years and significant investment. To remain competitive, automakers like Ford must navigate government mandates while leveraging global partnerships to achieve essential economies of scale. These collaborations serve as vital bridges until domestic infrastructure can fully support the industry’s transition.
