Toyota Is Preparing It’s First Ever Extended-Range EV For The Chinese Market
Toyota is reportedly preparing its first extended-range electric vehicle for the Chinese market, with production expected to begin next year.
According to a report published by Nikkei Asia, Toyota plans to begin production of an extended-range electric vehicle in China in April 2027. Production could initially be just a few hundred vehicles per month, but the company reportedly wants to increase production to around 200,000 units in 2027 and to approximately 400,000 in 2028.
Unlike a conventional hybrid, an extended-range electric vehicle uses an electric motor to drive the wheels, while the internal combustion engine acts as a generator. The motor does not mechanically drive the wheels, allowing the car to function as an electric vehicle in everyday driving while providing backup gasoline power when the battery needs extra power. Range-extender vehicles are extremely popular in China. Toyota, however, has been perfecting conventional hybrids for decades.
