Ford Goes After The G-Wagon With A Lincoln-Based Bronco
Before you think we are saying that the Ford Bronco really looks like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, we mean that they both hark back to old designs. With the G-Class, it is an extremely cautious evolution of a design that has barely changed since the late 1970s; the Bronco is a downright retro model with a design that is only a few years old. The approach is therefore at least somewhat comparable, with the biggest difference being that, compared to the G-Class, the Bronco is still primarily a roughneck, whereas the G-Class has become more of a luxury SUV that happens to hold its own in rough terrain as well.
Ford is now making plans to position the Bronco more in the same luxury market as the G-Class. The Detroit Free Press reports this based on conversations with insiders. The idea is to release a Lincoln version of the Bronco. Lincoln still exists as Ford’s luxury brand. It remains to be seen whether it will truly be a Bronco with a slightly different front end or an entirely new model with the Bronco’s technical basis. In any case, the model would be positioned below the Lincoln Navigator in the lineup.
