Largest Recall Ever In China For Door Handles
The largest recall ever has been launched in China. That is far less baffling when you know that the problem affects multiple car manufacturers, because due to new regulations, recessed door handles are only permitted there under certain conditions.
The restrictions on recessed door handles had already been announced but apparently affect existing cars as well. Reuters reports that eleven automakers, including Tesla and a large number of local manufacturers, are recalling their cars to the workshop. At Tesla alone, this reportedly involves nearly three million vehicles, including both cars built in China and imported models.
The Chinese government’s concerns relate to door handles that sink into the bodywork when not in use. These are difficult for many to decipher and could even create dangerous situations in the event of an accident, as emergency services or bystanders cannot easily gain entry due to the unnecessarily complicated door handles.
For new models, this type of door handle will even be banned in China starting next year, meaning a car like the BMW iX3 will get different door handles there than here. For existing models, damage is limited by, for example, warning stickers referring to the mechanical emergency opening often present somewhere, plus the addition of software that ensures, for instance, that the windows open automatically after a collision.
