Maserati South Africa Ordered To Refund DJ Black Coffee’s $437K Over Undelivered MC20 Supercar

Grammy-winning DJ Black Coffee has won a legal battle against Maserati South Africa after the Johannesburg High Court ordered the luxury carmaker to pay his company, Soulistic Music, $437,000 (R7 million) over a disputed supercar deal.
The dispute follows Maserati’s failure to deliver a customized MC20 Cielo valued at approximately $563,000 (R9 million). Black Coffee had planned to upgrade to this model from an MC20 Coupe, which he bought from the dealership in 2022 for $437,000.

According to TimesLIVE, Black Coffee stated that the dealership offered him $437,000 for his MC20 as a trade-in, with the agreement that he would pay the remaining $125,000 (R2 million) when the new vehicle was delivered in July 2024.

However, his customized MC20 Cielo—which is the retractable-roof Convertible version of MC20 Coupé —was not delivered as expected. Black Coffee claimed he was informed in June 2024 that the car would only enter production in August, with no definite delivery date specified.
The South African DJ, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, subsequently canceled the deal and demanded the return of his $437,000 trade-in value, turning what started as a luxury car purchase into a costly court battle for Maserati.

While Maserati disputed Black Coffee’s claims—arguing that no July 2024 delivery deadline had been agreed upon—the automaker maintained that some of his requested specifications required confirmation before production could begin.
Despite Maserati’s defense, the Johannesburg High Court ordered the dealership to repay the $437,000, with interest at 10.5 percent annually from August 22, 2024, until the amount is paid in full, alongside covering the legal costs.
