Police in Connecticut uses Apple’s ‘Find My’ to track, recover stolen $575k Ferrari, thanks to hidden AirPods.
Two suspects, aged 17 and 19 year, behind the theft were arrested while operating another stolen Acura TLX sedan.
The two suspects reportedly had an extensive history of motor vehicle thefts, according to the police.
Police in Connecticut successfully recovered a 2023 Ferrari 812 GTS sports car worth over $575,000 (or over N1.5 Billion in Naira), which was reported stolen on September 16, 2024.
Thanks to the owner’s Apple AirPods, which remained in the car at the time of the theft, the WPD’s Auto Theft Task Force was able to track the supercar to a gas station, using the Find My app.
After initiating a motor vehicle stop, the vehicle’s operator reportedly fled the scene, leaving behind their iPhone, which helped police arrest a 22 year old suspect identified as Dion Schontten.
According to the police, Schontten was arrested alongside 19 year old Keon Webster while they were operating another stolen Acura TLX. Both suspects had an extensive history of motor vehicle thefts.
Schontten was charged with Larceny of a Motor Vehicle (Second Offense) while Webster was charged with Larceny of a Motor Vehicle (Seventh Offense). Upon their court arraignment, Schontten’s bond was reduced to $150k (from $300k) and Webster’s bond was reduced to $300k ($1 million).
Commenting on the arrests, Fernando Spagnolo, the Chief of police in Waterbury, said “WPD continues to actively investigate motor vehicle thefts and hold individuals accountable for their actions.
“The arrest of Schontten and Webster, both with extensive criminal histories, demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that repeat offenders are held accountable so they do not continue to victimize our community.”
