A widely shared dashcam video has captured the moment a driverless Waymo vehicle collided with a minivan in Sunnyvale, California, sparking fresh debate over the challenges autonomous vehicles face when sharing roads with human drivers.

The incident happened on Sunday, August 23, 2026, when the minivan emerged from a parking lot exit and pulled onto the roadway directly in front of the oncoming Waymo vehicle.

While the initial video clips appear to show that the robotaxi was fleeing the scene, Waymo later issued a statement explaining that it moved forward to a wider section of the road, where the driverless vehicle safely wait for the other vehicle involved.

A Waymo spokesperson said: “Following the collision, the Waymo vehicle proceeded a short distance before stopping at a wider area of the roadway. This allowed traffic to continue flowing safely while the vehicle waited for the other party involved in the collision to approach so insurance information could be exchanged.”

Interestingly, many online users who watched the footage were quick to defend the Waymo car, with some arguing that blaming the vehicle’s software for a blatant human error will hurt the progress of autonomous driving.

While few users questioned whether the Waymo could have reacted sooner, many commenters argued that the driver had entered an active roadway without properly yielding, with some pointing out that the Waymo appeared to have the right of way.

Autojosh notes that the self-driving vehicle involved was one of Waymo’s brand-new Zeekr RT electric robotaxis. The cutting-edge Robotaxi is equipped with 13 cameras, 4 lidar units, and 6 radar sensors designed to allow it navigate complex city streets.
