A Battered And Rusty 1994 Mercedes G-Wagon Sells For N13 Million At Auction In Kenya
A battered and rusty 1994 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon SUV sells for about $17,000 at an auction in Kenya.
The grounded 29 year old G-Class has battered body and an engine that no doubt needs a replacement to work.
While many Kenyans were puzzled about the purchase, a restoration specialist highlighted why it fetched so much at the auction.
He revealed that the owner will spend about $28k while breaking down the cost to restore it to its former glory.

A battered and rusty 1994 Mercedes-Benz G-Class (G-Wagon) SUV was recently auctioned off in Kenya for 2,400,000 Kenyan Shillings (about N13 Million or $16,870) after bidding started at KSh 20,000 and rose to KSh 1.4 million.
Despite having a battered body and an engine that no doubt needs a replacement to work, this grounded Mercedes SUV still fetched a huge amount when the hammer dropped in May 2023.

While many Kenyans were puzzled on why the unnamed buyer will pay that huge amount for the car, a vehicle restoration specialist, Jonah Kale, told TUKO that the purchase was worth it.

Highlighting why the rusty, boxy 29 year old Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon SUV fetched a considerable sum at the auction, Kale said :
“The body structure of the 1994 model is the same as that in recent models. Mercedes Benz only made minor changes to the exterior.
Whoever bought the old model can get body kits to upgrade it to a 2019 or 2020 model.”

He further revealed that the owner will spend about $28,000 while breaking down the cost to restore the G-Wagon to its former glory.
“The exterior will cost around KSh 1 million ($7k) while the interior will be around KSh 2 million ($14k). The engine and transmission cost over KSh 1 million ($7).”
