All-electric 2026 Mercedes EQS To Launch With Yoke Steering Wheel And Steer-by-wire System
All-electric 2026 Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan to launch with yoke-style steering wheel and Steer-by-wire system.
Mercedes said that the tech does not require a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels.
Instead, the driver’s steering requests are transmitted quickly and directly via an electrical cable, i.e. ‘by wire’.
Compared to the traditional circular steering control, the new system provides not only better handling and manoeuvring.
It also allows easier parking as there is no longer a need to re-grip the steering wheel while parking.

Mercedes-Benz has announced that a production model 2026 EQS will arrive next year with yoke-style steering wheel system and steer-by-wire technology, ditching the traditional steering steering in the flagship all-electric Mercedes sedan.
According to Mercedes, the new steering wheel system has already completed more than one million test kilometres on test benches, in addition to a similar number of test kilometres on proving grounds.

“This technology does not require a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Instead, the driver’s steering requests are transmitted quickly and directly via an electrical cable, i.e. ‘by wire’,” Mercedes said in a statement.
Compared to the traditional circular steering control, the completely new steer-by-wire provides not only better handling and manoeuvring but also allows easier parking as there is no longer a need to re-grip the steering wheel while parking.

In addition to the superior driving feel, the flattened underside of the steering wheel creates more room in the cabin, allowing a better view of the driver’s display as well making getting in and out of the car easier.
“In combination with SAE Level 3 conditionally automated driving, it will enable an even more immersive entertainment experience in the medium term. That’s because the flat steering wheel provides a better view of the display when streaming your favourite show, for example,” said Markus Schäfer, Mercedes Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement.
