Automakers Hails UK Government Decision To Delay Petrol/Diesel Car Ban Till 2035 - autojosh

Automakers hails UK government decision to delay petrol-diesel-powered cars ban to 2035 from 2030.

In a statement, it said the five-year extension brings the UK in line with the European Union and other regions.

PM Sunak added that existing gas- and diesel-powered cars would still be allowed to be sold as used ones after 2035.

Sunak noted that the government is working hard to make the UK a leader in electric vehicles.

Jaguar Land Rover and Toyota has hailed the United Kingdom government’s five-year delay to the ban on petrol and diesel car sales after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pushed the decision back to 2035.

“You’ll still be able to buy a combustion-engined vehicle until 2035”, Sunak said, adding that existing gas- and diesel-powered cars would still be allowed to be sold as used vehicles after 2035.

In a statement, Sunak said the five-year extension brings the UK in line with the European Union and other regions. He added that the government is working hard to make the UK a leader in electric vehicles.

“I expect by 2030 the vast majority of cars sold will be electric because the costs are reducing, the range is improving, the charging infrastructure is growing,” the PM said.

The UK’s combustion ban is part of the government’s 2050 net-zero goal, though Sunak believes this can still be achieved without burdening the population with impractical policies.

“I also think, at least for now, it should be you that makes that choice, not the government forcing you to do it. Because the upfront cost is high. We’ve got further to go to get the charging infrastructure in place,” added Sunak.

Jaguar Land Rover, which called the delay “pragmatic,” said :

“The announcement by the Government on the revised end date for the sale of petrol and diesel cars in the UK is pragmatic and brings the UK in line with other nations, which we welcome.”

Toyota, which has plants in Burnaston, Derbyshire, and Deeside, also welcomed the delay, while the founder of FairFuelUK, the drivers’ campaign group, Howard Cox, who his excited by the decision, said :

“I am delighted common sense has prevailed, and the PM has listened to overwhelming majority of people”.
