It’s been over 34 years since Nigerian nationalist and statesman Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo died peacefully at his Ikenne home, on 9 May 1987, at the age of 78.
Awolowo, who played a key role in Nigeria’s independence movement, the First and Second Republics and the Civil War, was laid to rest in Ikenne, amid tributes across political and ethno-religious divides.

His remains (and later his wife Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo (HID) on 25 November 2015), was buried in a Mausoleum situated at the Ikenne residence of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The Ikene Museum, commissioned on August 4, 1989 by H.I.D Awolowo, harbored some of Awo’s personal effects, including a classic Mercedes-Benz W114 limousine.
Awo’s eight seater Mercedes-Benz limousine, used in 1979 and 1983 campaign for his political ambition, was purchased 52 years ago in 1970.
