Chinese EV Export Receives Massive Sales Despite Import Tariff Issues
The final import duties on Chinese electric cars are coming and Chinese manufacturers are preparing for it. There were a lot more Chinese EVs heading to Europe last month.
China shipped more than 60,000 electric vehicles to the European Union last month, a 61 percent increase over last year. The European Commission plans to impose additional import duties on Chinese electric cars at the end of this month.
The surge in shipments suggests that Chinese electric vehicle makers are hoping to avoid the new tariffs for a while. The EU imposed provisional duties in June, but officials in Brussels said they would not be imposed retroactively.
EU member states recently voted to impose new tariffs of up to 35 percent. Although China and the EU are still negotiating an alternative solution, the tariffs are expected to come into effect by the end of this month.
