BMW X5 To Get A “Range Extender” Option But Not Globally
The BMW X5 currently offers five powertrain options—gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric, and hydrogen—providing an unparalleled level of choice in its segment.
The G65 X5 already distinguishes itself within its segment by offering an extensive array of powertrain configurations. However, BMW is reportedly planning to expand this lineup further by introducing a sixth option.
The Sixth Option
BMW is reportedly planning a range-extended iX5 for the Chinese market by 2028, potentially featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine as an onboard generator.
Backtracking?
Should this report prove accurate, it presents a notable irony. Only months ago, BMW asserted that range extenders were unnecessary for its electric vehicles, citing the strength of its existing plug-in hybrid lineup and expressing confidence in current battery technology, as evidenced by the iX3. The iX3 boasts an impressive EPA-rated range of 434 miles, with real-world testing occasionally exceeding 485 miles on a single charge.
Nevertheless, BMW appears to be re-evaluating the potential of range-extender technology. This sector is currently dominated by the Chinese market, where many electric vehicles feature range-extender variants. Furthermore, competitors are increasingly adopting this technology, as seen with Nissan’s well-received e-Power system in Europe and Asia, alongside upcoming releases from Stellantis, including the Ram 1500 Ramcharger and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV.
Autohome reports the range-extended iX5 will be exclusive to China, though strong demand could eventually lead to an international release.
